Permissions question

We are running a file server with simple permissions (as in posix, no ACL's) for a few groups to access various shares. Recently we've seen a problem surface where various users are getting access denied errors to shares that they should be able to access. Deleting and re- adding the group to their user account fixes the problem usually, but I'm wondering whether anyone else has seen this problem and has a more permanent fix.
