Multiple WAN interfaces

Hi

I have recently had installed a second ADSL line to give a bit of security for if we have trouble with our existing line/provider.

I have connected it to a spare nic on my G5 xserve running 10.3.9 server. The spare NIC is a 2 port Gigabit NIC from small-tree communications.

I was assuming that incoming access to the 2nd ADSL would come into the xserve and give access to the same services as on the primary nic but I can't access the server via the 2nd line. If I change the order of the 2 external NICs on the xserve in the network port configurations pane on the network system preferences panel the situation is reveresed I can access everything via NIC2 & nothing via NIC1

I was hoping to list the 2nd line as an MX backup so if line 1 is down there would still be a route through to our mail server.

I think this might be a routing issue but its getting a bit confusing!

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks

Dave
