But this probably is not really spam. LinkedIn asks you to send a copy of your addressbook to them to import to add all of your contacts so that you can see who else you already know is on the service. They offhandedly mention that they will check those people who are not already matched... neglecting to mention that they will do this by sending everyone in your addressbook a message.
So, the list was in the addressbook, and the first-name field has the word "Mac" in it.
