I have a new MacPro with Server 10.4.10 on it, it came with 10.4.9 and I updated to the latest. kernel_task in Activity monitor shows Real Memory used as 1.3G I use this computer very little as a server, mostly as a desktop. I open a couple programs and it starts paging like crazy, so looked at Activity monitor and see what I mentioned above.

I have looked at a couple other servers I have here, a G4 and a G5 and also my MacBook Pro but have never seen memory usage by kernel_task above 200MB, what is going on, do I need to reinstall?

No you don't need to reinstall. This is the kernel running and runs all system services. The load it has reflects the system services you have running from other applications/processes. You may want to examine those for unwanted or unnecessary activity.
