Uhhh, you are changing the IP.  You are going to kill your remote connection after you run the command.

Actually the changeip command does not actually change the IP address in use by the NI's, it merely preps the OS components for the change.

changeip also does not, as reported/alluded, change IP addresses used in configuration files by various services. For example, if you have IP addresses listed in Apache, Postfix, or other service daemon configurations it will not affect these changes. What it does change is OS specific values for how the server "talks to itself" for things like OD and authentication.

I suppose there's some very good reason for all those packages to not
read the IP address from /L/P/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist and
I just fail to understand it ...

Because this is the values of the NI and the system may have more than one NI and each NI can have more than one IP address on which it responds. The "primary" IP address for the machine is set during initial systems configuration. Mac OS X Server (not client) uses this, and only this (no matter what other IP addresses any NIs may have), IP address to obtain it's hostname and to communicate back to system services. (Not to be confused with services, such as web or mail, provided by the server.)

I might also bring to everyone's attention that CNAMEs in in-addr.apra PTRs is not supported. That is if the DNS for for your reverse CIDR block is obtained from a non Class-C subnet block (for instance you provide reverse DNS for less than a /24 block, e.g. a  /28 block of say addresses in the range of 123.123.123.96 - 123.123.123.111) then the reverse lookup first returns a CNAME pointing to the real PTR and this freaks out the way changeip and the system expects DNS name turns to operate. In these cases, `changeip --checkhostname` and its ilk will fail to properly obtain the correct hostname for the system.
