I would not get rid of my AD servers if you are in a large environment as I do not think you would have a method of managing your Windows boxes with OD and that will be important if you are in a large environment.
One alternative would be to leverage SUSE Enterprise Linux (
http://www.novell.com/linux/) and their management tools for Windows clients. You would then 'tie' the OD and NDS environments together. I am not sure if that will lower your costs or not.
Also NTFS rights will not 'transfer', to my knowledge, to HFS+ or AFP. User passwords will also not transfer in most cases between two LDAP implementations.
