I have a problem and a question. As you all know, Time Machine eats
space. But so too does regular day to day file storage. Sadly, the
drives on my server aren't big enough to handle both and so I had to
devote what was supposed to be my backup server to Time Machine image
storage. That machine will shortly be shipped out to an undisclosed
location to assume its original purpose -- service as hot backup to my
primary server -- which means I would lose Time Machine on my network,
an unforgivable sin.
So my question is: short of buying two new multi-TB drives to use in
the Xserve (if such animals even exist) what kind of storage array can/
should I add to my server? I've got about 50 machines, all Leopard,
on my network, all running Time Machine, backing up incrementally once
an hour. Incredibly reliable and foolproof so far, but we're going to
start digitizing reams of images and articles we have sitting on a
server on top of beginning a video archive, and my storage needs are
probably going to triple or quadruple once that starts, so this
solution has to have legs. Need to be able to expand it on the fly
without egregious downtime. I would prefer to solve this problem
before it becomes a problem so I won't have to wring anyone's neck
when they figure out they can't store thousands of scanned pictures
and articles in the 200GB of space I have set aside on the server for
machine imaging :).
Thanks,
