You'll notice that when Apple stopped selling their own RAID array, they
started selling Promise ones. We use Promise VTM610i arrays behind our
servers... they're iSCSI, so you just hook them up on regular GigE, and
don't have to worry about adding cards to the servers or having them
directly adjacent to the servers. We put sixteen 1TB Seagate server-class
drives (important for reliability, since they're shielded against EM
emissions from other nearby drives, like in an array) rather than desktop-
class drives in each. They have nice email and web-based reports and
alarms. We've been using them since they came out, and very happy with
them.
