Yes, it sounded that way. And I do have a preference for command-line
programs in general since I'm compiling and running my programs from
the command line it is extra time to go start another program, etc.
And it really got me mad that Saturn wouldn't allow me to select any
executable program from its open statement, but only aqua/carbon ones.
Why is this? It would be really nice if I could tell it to profile any
program (or at least a shell script, which I could make run my
program).
About Shark, I didn't really try it much the first time I looked at it.
I figured it was setup to work with "mac" programs and wouldn't work
well with my fortran code. But after playing around with it a bit it
is pretty nice. I still cannot figure out how to get all the time a
routine uses (adding in all the things it calls) without manually going
through and selecting all the things it calls and selecting "Charge
symbol xxx to callers". Is there a direct way to do this?
So maybe Shark will work well enough for me, or even be better. And I
like learning about new tools, and do so often. But Apple should still
fix gprof.
Bob
ps And I've never used gprof before but used prof and pixie on True 64
Unix, which both appear to be better than gprof (even if it worked).
