Re: InputSlot and MediaType

My point is that for (HP) PostScript devices, the selection of a
media type leads to the selection of an input slot. (An administrator
can assign the media type to the tray.) If the user also specifies an
input slot (via the Paper Feed PDE), then the two selections might
conflict. Since the input slot selection is more explicit, it is
used. This might potentially confuse the user.

I did, in fact, understand this, as we support all of your PostScript
products (as well as the PCL products) and know all about MediaType/
InputSlot conflicts.

However, given that tray selection with HP printers can be done
via the media type or input slot, it would make sense to include
the UIConstraint so that the user cannot select both options without
getting a conflict. Depending on the UI, this conflict might
prevent the user from proceeding or just come up as a warning, but
in either case the conflict is a signal to the user that they've
asked for something that doesn't make sense.

I believe that Apple's Paper Feed PDE is intended to work only with PostScript devices. Thus, *MediaType should be treated using the
PostScript and not the raster model, that is, as a means of selecting
an input tray, as was the case in the Classic LaserWriter driver.

Since all printers based upon the CUPS raster driver interface
appear as PostScript printers, differentiating based upon whether
the printer is PostScript or not won't work.

However, you *can* look for filters in the PPD file (the cupsFilter
lines) which define additional filters for the printer. If any of
the filters handle the application/vnd.cups-raster MIME type, then
the queue is a raster printer.
