Re: PDE hosted by printer module

Prashanth,

PDEs belong either to the system, the application or the printer driver. You cannot create a PDE that will be loaded in the Print dialog for all printers and/or all applications. We are always open to suggestions for more system PDEs but at this time we have no plans to support application and printer-independent third-party PDEs.

Hi all

I am a newbie to printing in Mac OS X. Can anybody please clarify my doubts
?

1. I went thruogh the printing dialog extension pdf, I understood
registering our PDE through application. But this doesn't help me since
my PDE should work as a generic one. ie for a set of printers. Is it
possible to do this ? I also gone through some documents which suggests our
PDE to be placed /System/Library/Printers. Is it possible to invoke our PDE
from any arbitrary printer module ? According to the document I read it says
that every printer module must supply a callback
"PMCreatePrintingDialogExtensionsPathsProcPtr" which provides the locations
of PDE to the printing system.

2. Do we need to write a printer module ? Is it possible to write a PDE
which will register through printer module without touching the PM.

3. If it is possible, how do I get the data from the application to my PDE.
I read the documents which says application gives the data to the PDE
through spool file. But I didn't understand how I can access the data in my
PDE. Please throw some light on it.

4. Please advice some documents which might help me.

Any help from anybody would be greatly appreciated.

Regards

Prashanth
