PM Template ticket's Color Mode key

In my Printer Modules, I specify the kPMColor, kPMBlackAndWhite, and
kPMGray color modes, since the Apple PM sample code does likewise. However,
I don't know why. What is this key used for? (The printer I am currently
working in is an 8-bit contone dye-sublimation printer, with CMY or Black
ribbons available for printing (but only one can be loaded at a time.)
