HP laserjet unacceptably slow printing ugh!

I have been beating my head against a rock for far to long on this so I am seeing if anyone knows what's up with this.
Laserjet 2100, with a Jetdirect 600n network card. Ethernet only. Jammed full of ram at 40MB's.
OS X 10.2.8

If I go to slashdot it prints fine. If I go to loislaw.com it chokes.
Loislaw takes *hours* literally to print. I have noted the following things:

When watching in print center it appears that it randomly hits a certain percentage spooled and chokes. Sometimes it gets to 63% sometimes 80% and just wedges for *hours*.
Using tcpdump I notice that when it chokes the printer stops accepting data. The TCP window goes from (1460) to (0). Almost as if the jetdirect card just can't accept any more data. Then if i leave it printing overnight it usually prints the loislaw pages by morning. Once in a while the printer is still blinking when I walk in, in the morning.
This is insane. I have tried everything to fix this, upgraded the firmware on the printer to the latest rev, ran disk util to fix perms (although I have no idea how that ever got started as a way to resolve printing problems), moved from appletalk to IP printing, setup the printer through the cups web interface on OS X instead of print center. I give up I cannot get this thing to print reliably. Some pages constantly choke when printing such as loislaw above. Does *anyone* have any idea's WTF is borked with OS X printing?
I can't tell if its LPD or the printer itself. Im torn between the printer getting goofy PS from OS X and it wigging out for hours trying to process it, or if LPD is just totally hosed on OS X. I have seen many many people have this problem, a quick search on google for "HP printing slow OS X" turns up many problems. I'm at the end of my rope on this one, Does anyone have any ideas?
