CUPS driver/backend question

I can't seem to find any info how/if CUPS drivers can get status information from a backend (maybe I'm using the wrong search terms).

From what I can tell, the normal communications flow looks like a one way street: CUPS->filters->driver->backend->device

I don't see any way for the driver to be able to get status information back from the printer via the backend. Am I missing something, or is that how it works? I've seen that the example backends send status to CUPS via stderr, but not any way for the driver to get anything back.

Is the expectation that the driver only sends job data to the backend, and the backend is responsible for reading status/error data back from the printer and presenting it only to CUPS?

Thanks,
Dave

It's not denial. I'm just very particular about the reality I choose to accept. -Calvin
