Why would you want to run your process like this anyway? I mean, why
fork? If it works "from the console", why complicate matters?

Stay with the console version and let process supervisors like xinetd,
watchdog or daemontools handle the backgrounding (or are there other
reasons you fork?).

Just my thoughts anyway.
