of course this is a bug. how could it be viewed as anything else? you select 'rename', you attempt to rename the file and without any reason given, you're unable to rename it.

i came across this just recently. didn't realise, until i read this thread, i wasn't being allowed to change the name because i was trying to change the case of a letter - just thought "that's odd", deleted the file references in pb, renamed in finder, and dropped them back in. how can that not be viewed as a bug? not exactly a serious one, but nonetheless a bug.

the 'file with that name exists' error that Finder gives you is what you're running into, and if the file with that name is the one whose name you're changing, then that's just dumb. Changing from 'foo.txt' to 'Foo.txt' should work, there shouldn't be an error.
