Re: What Should I learn Before Cocoa?

I haven't. I am a recent switcher and picked up "Cocoa with Objective-C". It's an ok book. Doesn't explain a lot of the why's, but muddles through the working knowledge to get you through the basics.

Knowing C, I can read much of everything that's going on. The Objective-C is not that hard, as there are very few changes. However, the learning of a new framework (Cocoa) takes time. I have spent years working with MFC and still don't know it all. Now, I am back to a less than stellar IDE writing both header and implementation files, rather than adding a function (like DevStudio). Add to that, trying to learn the Cocoa method names and functions is a little more work than I had anticipated.

What I really need is a conversion manual from Dev Studio to Project Builder/Interface Builder.

I understand the MVC philosophy, however, I am still a little slow in the learning how to implement it with PB/IB (Outlets and Actions) rather than a more connected method of development (DevStudio). Then again, it could just be that I have spent so much time in the MFC environment, much of it comes naturally now.. Who knows....

Lastly, but certainly not leastly (is that a word?), O'Reilley Press' "Cocoa in a Nutshell" is a must. Yeah, you don't need a book that shows the AppKit and Foundation classes. But it sure is handy. And the commentary is very well done. What I did was, while going through an example using Hillegass' or Garfinkel's book, I'd look up the class in the Nutshell and read all about that class. You don't learn it that well at that instant. But it does put a bug in your head for the future.

has anyone read o'reilly's objective-c pocket reference by david duncan? has anyone found that useful, or not useful?
