Re: PackageMaker and OS 10.1

Hi

I'm new to this forum. Please forgive me if this is the wrong place for
my question, but there is no other obvious list.

I've searched the list archives as best I can and there are no obvious
answers to my question. (Is the Search Archives web page option the
only way to do it? The output is incomprehensible!)

I have used Packagemaker to build a simple installer that places a
number of files on the user's disk. It works fine for users running OS
10.2.x but fails on a system running 10.1. The error message is
"Missing or old Bill of materials".

I am running the December 2002 developer tools, and Get Info on my copy
of PackageBuilder gives its version as "10.1a1". The PackageMaker
documentation on Apple's site says that version 10.1.1 should be able
to build packages that work with Jaguar and 10.1.

My questions are:

1. Is PackageMaker version 10.1a1 the same as 10.1.1?

2. If so, why would my package work on Jaguar but fail on OS X 10.1?

If you don't need the new features (i.e. all the property you can't access with it and which are quite interesting in some cases) of PackageMaker from Mac OS X 10.2 , one solution is to just use the PackageMaker version from Mac OS X 10.1.

My current guess would be that your installer is missing the alias which "should" be created by the most recent version of PackageMaker 10.1.1.

In Mac OS X 10.1 PackageMaker, all the files were prefixed with the name of the Packages. This was leading to an unwanted issue: when you were changing the name of the .pkg file, the Package would not work correctly. This was modified in 10.2 to use generic names. But the consequences of this modification were that Packages built with 10.2 PackageMaker could not install on Mac OS X 10.1 because the expected files were "not there". So Christmas 02 arrived and Santa Claus brought aliases for the pre/post install/upgrade/bom files. There's still a side issue which is discussed in one of the Technical Q&As from August 03 (on the ADC Web site).

Hope it helps.
