Problem linking using XCode

Hello.

I have a project which used to compile with the last version
of XCode before what I am using now (7B74) and now I get
an error which I cant interpret correctly:

FrogReader:0:
build/FrogReader.build/FrogReader.build/Objects-normal/ppc/read_scan.o
illegal reference to symbol: _gzeof defined in indirectly referenced
dynamic library /usr/lib/libz.1.dylib

The problem occurs in files that make use of <zlib.h> a library
allowing to read compressed files directly and compress stuff
in memory.

I am using:

Panther (7B74) plus its associated XCode version.
gcc3.3

I am in the process of using this for my diploma thesis, so
unfortunately time is an issue. Any pointers greatly appreciated.
