Is there any way to pass data to/from serial ports to QC?

Something similar to the MIDI Controller patch (but for serial ports) would be perfect. While MIDI can serve this purpose in many instances it is not always the right solution, and a serial patch would serve well.

As far as I know, MIDI is the only way to pass some pseudo serial data
