Indeed, that's the way to do it. Indeed, QCRenderers are very
low-overhead around a composition - there are no problems here.

Ok this sounds great, so if hypothetically you were to start designing a
new VJ program from scratch the most efficent way would be to use
QCRenderer instances for playing everything, plain quicktimes and QC
compositions wouldn't it?

If you want access to the full feature-set of Quartz Composer, yes. QC can wrap QT, but the reverse is not true.


And this is exactly the path that Performer uses?

Yes - the only thing that wouldn't be suited for VJ apps in Performer is the use of a Core Video Display Link to drive rendering, which may put too much burden on the computer. But the concepts are valid.
