Is there a way to extrude a 2D object? Or apply an image as a projection texture map through the depth of a cube?

For example, say I want to take a 2D image of a picture frame and give it depth.

I could build such a simple object with cubes and textures, but as the object got more complex... well, you can only imagine. From an earlier discussion I'd expect that lots of cubes would be unpleasant.
