I think that the problem is QT not having the right codec to do that. Usually when a program cannot access some content I have in an AVI file that is not readable by some application, I try avisynth (www.avisynth.org). In QuickTime case it does not accept avisynth avs files. Another solution would be to use a frame server program (www.videotools.net) in order to feed frames to QT and then save them. Anyway doing that is exactly as recompressing the file. In that case it would be better to compress with QT the uncompressed source. If you cannot do that a solution would be to use virtualdub (www.virtualdib.org) to save the AVI as uncompressed AVI (that can be opened by QT) and then recompress with some QT codec. I know that double compression is not a good thing, but I don't see any other way of doing that.
