MPEG-1 and QuickTime

Hello, I've written a library under win32 that uses QuickTime to open movies and extract single frames in a custom data structure to be used for Image Processing and Computer Vision. I've met tonight a strange (for me) problem with mpeg files (one of them is a bit longer than 1Mb therefore I can send it to whoever wants to give it a try). The problem is that if I open the file with an application using DirectShow (Media Player, ZPlayer, avisynth) I obtain a 352 * 288 image, if I open it with my library or QTPlayer 6 the image is just 320 x 176 and quality is definitely lower. Well, what's happening here? What can I do?
Even opening them with VirtualDub (that I think parses mpeg by itself) results in 352 * 288 frames.

Another question not strictly related to QT.
If I want to read and compress mpeg1 and mpeg2, what Open Source solution is available to "steal" code from? (the lib I'm making will be released as Open Source/LGPL/GPL.
I'd like to be as cross-platform as possible (QuickTime-> Mac/Win32, but I'd like to make mpeg movies with Linux if possible).

Thanks
Riccardo
