retrieving QT Atom by type 'meta'

I want to retrieve the metadata in m4a(or m4p) files. Scouring the archives I found out that the Atom is called 'meta'. How do I get this information, without just raw parsing, in a new AtomContainer alone(or another easy-to-access data structure) by just knowing the type 'meta'(and not knowing the parent node, ID or index). I've seen a smattering of code examples here and there but I'm still pretty in the dark.
