Subject: SndRecord workaround?
To: <email@hidden>

QuickTime's SndRecord function crashes on 10.4 and on some systems running
10.3.

You can see it crash using the stock SimpleText example in the Developer
folder (/Developer/Examples/Carbon/SimpleText). Choose "Record" from the
"Sound" menu.

Anyone know of a workaround?

Thanks.

Terry

Hey Terry,

I remember this being an issue where it would simply crash but I know that it was fixed (or one version of the crash was fixed) but I have not encountered it since myself. Maybe others on the list can confirm a specific setup or OS versions it's crashing on, or maybe a specific device you're trying to use to record with and so on.

As for a work around. Don't use the Sound Manager, and no I'm not trying to be a putz by saying that :).

The Sound Manager has been deprecated for some time and we would genuinely like to see developers back away from it (even if some are backing away quite slowly, that's fine just keep backing away).

If you want to stick to QuickTime APIs use the Sequence Grabber and the new SGAudio Channel as demonstrated in CaptureAndCompressIPBMovie or WhackedTV. or use Core Audio -- there's a whole bunch of code and docs in the CoreAudio SDK's for both Panther and Tiger to help you out and there's also a Core Audio API mailing list specifically dedicated to Audio and MIDI (the audio engineering team is very active on that list).

So that said however, the API shouldn't just crash of course so please follow up with a bug report if you haven't done so already and while we don't want developers writing new code using these older APIs we don't want older code to start crashing either because that just sucks.

Thanks!

regards,
edward
