How to influence the chosen codec during playback?

Hello,

I am trying to understand and influence the system how quicktime chooses or builds the decoding graph for video files. So, where can I find information about the topic? How and when is quicktime choosing the codecs for decoding the media streams in mov files? And is it possible to influence this choosing process or later on change the codec used for decoding? I know it form DirectShow that there the automatic graph building process is trying to build a graph for the whole decoding and prioritizing filters after some config numbers. Is it similar in QT?
