Re: down-convert analog RGBHV to HD or HDV and then capture it with QuickTime...

This month's Govt Video mag has an
ad for such a unit by DVDO that does
RGBHV/dvi -> whatever. It doesn't
say HDV/DV. You might be able to use
this or a Folsom to feed a DVCPRO HD
w/ a FW i/o option.

Also, at least 2 companies offer 2K i/o
cards as of the last IBC. IIRC, the DVS
rep mentioned an api for their card
to let you write compressed downconverted
image seqs from 2k inputs, as in creating
proxies in RT, if you so wish.
The Bluefish board may have similar
features as well. I do not remember if
either supported QT, however.

So I have a high rez analog RGBHV signal that I am currently turning into NTSC and then turning into DV over firewire which I'm capturing with QuickTime. See:

I'd now like to capture it at a higher resolution, say real 1080 HD or HDV.

So two questions, hopefully on topic for here:

(1) Anybody know a box I can get to transcode RGBHV (say up 2048 x 1556) down to HD, where I assume I can buy an expensive card, or HDV, where I'm assuming I can use QuickTime to capture.

You're looking for a 'Scan Converter'. For the top of the line, try the Folsom ImagePro HD.

(2) How does one go about capturing something better than DV resolution with QuickTime? It's not clear to me that the whole WhackedTV route can do better than DV (although I'm assuming that if I plug a HDV signal in I might be able to capture it).

From the ImagePro HD, you will get HD-SDI. I suggest you look at the Decklink series of capture cards. They come with a simple app,
and support the QT API if you want to roll your own. There's also an AJA card called the Kona 2. I'm not aware of any scan converters that will go straight to HDV. Take a look at the two cards I suggested, maybe one of them will do on card HDV encoding. I suspect otherwise you'll have to capture then re-encode, or use a format that it hardware supported.

Any pointers?

Thanks.
