Is there any replacement for QTUtilities.c/SpriteUtilities.c (MovieSprites example code)?

I'm currently getting my head around the code in MovieSprites (sample apple code), in order to do some basic sprite manipulation.
I'm in the middle of attempting to integrate some of the helper modules (QTUtilities.c/SpriteUtilities.c), and I'm getting loads of deprecation warnings (DisposeGWorld, SetGWorld, EraseRect, etc etc)

Is there alternative code available that compiles cleanly using the latest APIs? Am I doing the "right thing" using this sample code for sprite manipulation, or have things moved on considerable and I'm now studying/using code that is no longer relevant?
