opening movies located on windows file server

All,

I have an issue with mac clients accessing movies on windows file servers.

On windows, I can use this URL:
file://serverA/shareA/video.mov

On mac, the url doesnt work. (neither does smb:// or cifs://). The windows share must be mounted and then the following url works:
file:///Volumes/shareA/video.mov

In this case, the path is not absolute on the network (eg if
smb://serverB/shareA is also mounted, which shareA is correct?). Also, if a reference movie is created to this file, it can not be opened on windows.

Is it possible to create a DataRef (eg Alias or URL DataRef) to a file
on a windows server that is cross platform (to be stored in a reference
movie)?

More generally, is it possible to open a movie located on a windows file server from a mac, without using the "/Volumes" path.

Thanks,
Andrew.
