Writing data to a movie manually

Im reading the comment 'better chunking can be achieved by flattening the movie after it is finished, or by grouping samples, writing them in groups to the data reference manually, and using AddSampleTableToMedia." contained in CaptureAndCompressIPBMovie.

and I'm wondering, does that mean that I should be writing the movie data (say, a hundred frames at a time) myself, using a standard 'open the move file append data to it' call, or does that comment imply the use of some other QuickTime call to write the movie data?

Regards,
Neil Clayton
