In the future, it would be a "good thing" to define a standard API for:

1) List of video resolutions supported
2) List of hardware supported frame rates
3) Valid combinations of above
     rates for a given resolution
     resolutions for a given/minimum rate
4) Which of these are currently valid given available bus bandwidth

I would also add:

5) Analog Signals Inputs supported (if relevant), for example NTSC, PAL, SECAM or others too.

For A/D converter the signal input used affects 1,2 and 3.

Although we add in the "fiel","colr", "pasp", "clap" and "gama" Image Description Extensions to the image description for our VDIGs (Vitana's PL1394VC under OS 9, Vitana PL6xx non DCAM FW Video Cameras and The Imaging sources' DFG/1394-1 for OSX/ OS 9), the user can't get this info with "VDGetImageDescription()" until they've successfully called "VDSetCompression()".

Also it would be nice if there was a "Progressive" type, which could mean size is not "tied" to signal such as USB CCD/CMOS and FW (both DCAM and non DCAM types) Video/Web cameras.

HTH..
