I don't know, I find this 'feature' more annoying than useful. First, if you
open several movies in QT player, only the first (topmost if I remember
right) adjusts its gamma. Second, if you are using MIAMs (movie in movie) in
a custom movie, having just your mp4 content appear with a differently
shaded white background is disconcerting. Finally, if you have already
adjusted the gamma of your display (in my case, on a powerbook, to 6500K and
2.2) and then have your mp4 movie 'correct' this again, is also not a good
thing.
Perhaps these are special cases - if I had a way to turn this feature off or
control its operation it wouldn't be so bad. But, AFAIK, you can't even do
this with a tool like LiveStagePro.
Just out of interest, how does the codec determine what gamma you've
currently got? Through colorsync (but it might be turned off, PCs don't use
it) or in the assumption that Macs are 1.8 and PCs 2.2? That's not a good
assumption, ironically, especially so for those people who care about
calibration.
