Gamma Factor 2

Could someone be so kind and explain how one is to proceed to get the
gamma factor straight, first on monitors and second while encoding on
either Macs (9.2.2 and OsX) and/or Win (2k) platforms. Is the Adobe
Gamma prog on Windows effective, and what about the Display Calibrator
on OsX?  What in heavens is the White Point function? I can't find
much info on this.
