hinted text tracks

Can text tracks be hinted or must they be exported as video tracks?  I
have run into this issue combining sound and text tracks using GoLive. 
When a  movie is created with these two track types an export transforms
the text track into a hinted video track.  Not a real problem, but I
want to make sure things are working as they ought.
