Subject: want to get started digitizing videos

Hi,

We need to digitize some films that are on VHS. What hardware and software
do I need in order to transfer films from videotape into my Mac G4? Is
there some special kind of interface board that I need that installs into
the G4? Thanks very much.

We have set up a Sony GVD300 which is like a miniDV camera without a lens/monitor. It takes in a standard video signal, and digitises it to miniDV tapes from which you can then import it into iMovie using Firewire connection. Same path to get it out the other way again, except that you can send it out the analogue video port the same time as recording it onto miniDV. It has its own on-board editing facilities, using simple In and OUT points but we've never used them as iMovie does all of that much easier.

Price of these units has fallen dramatically since we bought ours. A very good unit and nice and compact to take on the road with you. (there is another model that has a video screen included, for m ore money of course)
