i've tested the new codec update from 3ivx a little bit and i'm still impressed.

I'm impressed to, I will say. 3ivx 4.5 looks great.

at approximately the same file size the 3ivx is clearly better than the sorenson video 3 codec and every quicktime player 6+ is able to play these files.

Every Quicktime player with the 3ivx codec installed... otherwise, it's quite easy (especially with all of the quality optimizations) to produce a file that can't be played by the stock MPEG-4 decoder in QT6. The vast majority of 3ivx, DivX, and XviD content won't be playable without the 3iVX (or DiVX) decoder.

I haven't tested it as a MPEG-4 Simple Profile decoder... I wonder how it competes with Squeeze 3's MPEG-4 encoder.

qt pro also offers 2-pass support for 3ivx.

Well, 3ivx provides that... and it's a bit unclear to me how to use 2-pass encoding from Quicktime Pro, though DiVA makes it nice and easy.
