QuickTime avi support

Hi,

This might be a stupid question but I need to know what the sitiuation is about avi support in QuickTime.
Is it possible to play avi files in QuickTime?
If I select an avi file in QuickTime (6.4) it gives me the Convert option instead of the Open option. If I hit convert nothing happens because QuickTime tells me it's missing components and it cant't find those on the server.
I realize this is probably a codec problem but because I don't have a movie with a codec that's supported by QuickTime I'm not able to test it.

Suppose I've got a avi movie using the cinepak codec, am I able to play this movie without any problems? Will it have to "Convert" it first? (like the option I get when trying to open a file)
