Subject: QuickTime avi support
Is it possible to play avi files in QuickTime?
Yes, as long as they use codecs available in QuickTime.
For newer .avi files, you may need to install a third-party
QuickTime codec, such as divx.
If I select an avi file in QuickTime (6.4) it gives me the Convert
option instead of the Open option. If I hit convert nothing happens
because QuickTime tells me it's missing components and it cant't find
those on the server.
I realize this is probably a codec problem but because I don't have a
movie with a codec that's supported by QuickTime I'm not able to test
it.
Suppose I've got a avi movie using the cinepak codec, am I able to play
this movie without any problems? Will it have to "Convert" it first?
(like the option I get when trying to open a file)
Open any QuickTime movie and export to .avi using QuickTime Pro.
You'll see that it opens and plays without a hitch; the same is true of
avi files authored elsewhere, as long as the codecs are compatible.
The "convert" text on the button just means that it isn't a native
QuickTime
movie file; no worries, QT will create a movie in memory, on the fly,
that
uses the media data in the avi file. The "conversion" is transparent,
and
doesn't change the avi file or create a new movie file.
