I have recently evaluated all of the QuickTime codecs for QuickTime VR
use on Jaguar, so I decided to evaluate them on Panther as well. It
seems that none of teh crashing codecs have been fixed, and a new one
was added to the lot. Here's what I found:
pxlt (Pixar Pixlet - the new one) - crashes the Finder, Preview, etc.
during decompression of a still.
VP31 (On) - crashes the Finder, Preview, etc. during decompression of
a still.
SVQ1 (Sorenson 1) - encoder doesn't produce any output.
SVQ3 (Sorenson 3) - produces an expected size file, but cannot
decompress it.
JP2 (JPEG 2000) - crashes the Finder or QuickTime Player during
decompression of a panorama. Works fine for decompression of a still.
All tests were performed with a 5000 x 3460 source image. For the JP2
test, it was converted to a cubic QTVR. I get the same results whether
I compress with QuickTime Player, or my own programs.
None of the other codecs caused any problems.
Do these codecs have limitations on the source image size? Is Apple's
version of the Sorenson encoders bad, or does Sorenson's version yield
unusable files as well (I don't have Squeeze)? Any insight into why
they crash or don't work?
