It appears that QuickTime is no longer available as a "stub" file which, when run, offers the choice of three levels of installation: minimum, basic and advanced. I gather this from downloading the MacOS X version from:
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/
In other words, one must download and install the "whole nine yards" these days (19 MB for MacOS X, 10 MB for MacOS 8.6/9 and 11 MB for Windows). This appears to be the case cross-platform.
I see also that there are now two versions of QuickTime for windows, one that excludes Win98 but includes iTunes and another that excludes iTunes but includes Win98. Interesting.
The distinction between standalone installers and the download available at the URI cited above isn't clear to me any more. It looks like you get the same file either way, at least on MacOS X.
The only additional extensions to QuickTime are the 3rd party components which appear to include only:
FBX 3D Component
Microcosm
Axel
On2
Streambox
Zoomify
ZyGoVideo
Nothing from TechSmith (EnSharpen) or TotallyHip (QSXE) yet.
The reason I'm re-visiting all of this is that I have to make a recommendation for a "managed desktop" environment where faculty and students are unable to download and install anything. My initial thought is that I need to get as much on board in the initial load as possible. They claim that this system can "push" updates.
