Doh! I'm not making excuses for it...I'm just trying to help identify the
problem and offer workarounds.

Yea I'm with you and I do thank you for your time. Your thoughts are definitely helpful! Didn't mean to sound nasty or anything. I'm just hoping Apple improves these hw acc issues.

I guess what I'm saying is I want my h.264 movies to look at least as
good (color wise) on all machines as the same movie does encoded with
Sorenson 3 or regular mp4.

On my machine, hardware acceleration affects color similarly for any of
those formats. It doesn't on yours? (Can you post screenshots?)

I don't think either of those formats (Sorenson 3 or standard mpeg 4) are supported by hw acc. On any of the machines I've they appear the same in every application and toggling core video on and off does nothing. Both formats maintain color and gamma extremely well from machine to machine. That's why I was so confused that h.264 looked so washed out and color shifted... until I realized that core video was to blame (on macs.) But yea even on PC I've tested the same Sor 3 and mp4 clips... and they look correct.

I'm not convinced this is a CoreVideo issue, as IIRC the problem manifested itself when H.264 first came to Quicktime, which I believe was pre-CoreVideo/Tiger, no?

In my initial round of tests I pretty well recall linking this issue more to display gamma assumptions not matching up with reality than any H/W accel. issue - though admittedly I had never considered H/W acceleration as a factor at all! It could be both, for all I know!
