Safari and .m4a files

Anyone know why Safari won't recognize .m4a files as being media files? Any time I click on a link on a web page with a .m4a file I get a string of text loading, rather than QT recognizing the file type. I can download the file and load it into QT player, but I really shouldn't have to do that, should I? Is there something I'm missing?
