Many have tried to gauge this in the past. Those that have published their methods as well as their conclusions have always attracted quite a bit of argument one way or another. Those that haven't published their methods haven't gotten much acceptance of their conclusions amongst those who have studied the matter seriously.
Macromedia has done a great job of convincing many people of the ubiquity of Flash as has WMP but the nagging fact is that people will download whatever they need to experience compelling content. So culture eats strategy every day.
