In some cases, the user must install a player (even Mac users have to constantly install new QT players). BTW, the same also applies to streaming Windows Media. But, when you look to stream to the corporate market, ISO standards supported by QT have an installed player disadvantage. MPEG-1 installed by the OS on both Mac and Windows since 1997 or so. Supported by all major Linux media players. Supports HD decoding on P3 class hardware. No royalties on content. No royalties for decoder software. Yep, in 1991-1993 while we PC/Mac types were enthralled by 160x120 cinepak, www.chiariglione.org et al were specifying MPEG-1 at up to 60fps and 4000x4000 frame sizes. It wasn't until 96 that a PC/Mac could properly decode 352x240 in software, and they bundled it into the OS at that point. Now, that same decoding engine can handle 720p at 24 or 30fps without breaking a sweat. |
