Yep, everybody thinks Steve Jobs saved Apple. In
actuality it was QuickTime. Without QT, there is no x-platform iTunes, no
generic architecture for reading/writing media formats - all prerequisites to
the success of iPod. QuickTime
had little if anything to do with saving Apple. A
cross-platform iTunes would be straightforward to do without QuickTime. (Note
that iTunes was originally based on SoundJam, which I don’t believe used QuickTime
at all.) And if I understand it correctly, the QT team is
largely Canadian. <slapping
