Thread-topic: The color red - Microsoft - and some comments, Peace!
Pat,
Woah there cowboy!
Everything I said was specific to 4:2:0 subsampled codecs. So
H.264, MPEG-1, MPEG-2, VC-1 and WMV9. All 4:2:0 codecs have issues with
sharp edges of highly saturated colors, including ones from Microsoft.
This is mainly an issue with synthetic graphics - real-world imagery
rarely has high saturation contrast (looking at neon signs with a zoom
would be a counter example).
We're talking basic video processing mathematics here - no
reason to get your political hackles up.

Dear Fellow Quicktime Users & Ben Waggoner of Microsoft,
In 1996 I helped Dr. John Warnock (co-founder of Adobe Systems)
introduce
Acrobat ver. 3.0. At that time we had achieved full convergence of media
-
that is to say we had complete control of text on screen, desktop
printing,
audio, video, & weblinks.
At that same time most Windows OS users did not even have audio - and
Microsoft was engaged in activities to undermine our important work. The
rest is a matter of record. Antitrust actions by governments against
Microsoft - and Microsoft pays hundreds of millions of dollars in
out-of-court settlements. It was however - a great opportunity lost for
us
all. And here we go again!
This talk of the shortcomings of the H264 codec is quite a laugh. I have
found the quality of the H264 data to be excellent - indeed the best
codec I
have used to date! And the iPod is an absolute wonder! There is no
"blockiness" whatever - forget "a soft antialias". And this talk of poor
"reds" is way out of line.

DIGit_002
(H264) to your video iPod - and enjoy the red colors. In fact, the reds
(including my pajamas & sleeping hat) are exactly as I had wished them
to
be:

Again, Microsoft does their work among us. This time, however, there
will be
no stopping the paradigm. Too much momentum is building - and the world
is
ready for a change in how it gets both media & art.
"In Jobs We Trust" ... Ben ;-)
Peace,
PC
