Re: Nowadays - DV to Web, which tool(s)?

I too use to use Cleaner (actually Cleaner XL for Windows). I was really hoping that the 1.5 and 1.5.1 upgrades/updates would fully support QuickTime 7 since I'm doing a ton of H.264 encoding, but unfortunately it doesn't. In fact, encoding H.264 with Cleaner XL is outputting some less than adequate results.

Eric, I was unaware of Episode. Good to know. But is there anything equilivant for the PC?

Currently I'm running Sorenson Squeeze 4.3.3 and while the final output is very good, I miss having the level of control that I had with Cleaner. Squeeze makes too many assumptions for my liking, contains several features that either have bugs or are incomplete and is not nearly as stable as Cleaner was.

So what in the Windows world are people using?

Hi Eric,

A while ago, I used Cleaner to encode our QuickTime videos with the 3ivx codec.
The thing I really liked about cleaner was the preprocessing prior to encoding and the ability to FTP the completed files to the streaming server.

As you rightly say, Cleaner is now rather long in the tooth and having started to encode for H.264 and Flash I needed something better.

After scouting around, I chose Compression Master (now just renamed to Episode since Telestream acquired Popwire):

http://www.popwire.com/

It seems to do as good a job at preprocessing and supports all the latest codecs as well as including a Flash 8 encoder.
Unfortunately, it doesn't have an FTP upload facility but I wrote an AppleScript to do a similar job for overnight batch encoding.

It's a shame to have to discard Cleaner - not a cheap piece of software - but it seems to have been roundly overtaken by others.

Kind regards,

Andrew
