Thanks, Colin! You're right--Save As works every time.
The intermittent failures of the Export command to create fast-start mov
files is not good news for me--I'll have hundreds of AVI files to encode in
this project. I have half a dozen encoding tools, yet the Windows QT Player
seemed to be doing the best job for me--at least until this new quirk. But
if I have to reopen and resave every clip, I might as well encode from
Vegas 7 to MP4 and then resave as mov using QT Player. I like the H.264
codec, and the brand new Vegas 7 will employ it to make MP4 files but not
MOV files. Will I be losing something by going that route--encoding to mp4
with H.264 and then opening the mP4 in Qt Player and doing a Save As to
make an MOV file?
It's not fast start. I wouldn't generally trust the fast start setting in
an export, I've seen it fail too many times. Just open your exported movie
and do a Save As, that'll give you a fast start movie every time.
