Re: iMOVIE 08 IS HORRIBLE

Steve

First, answer me, how you can make such long posts to this list-- anything over 1200Kb is bounced, for me.

The 30 mins refers to editing.

No matter what tool I use (FCP, iMovie 06/HD/08) i still have to capture media, edit, and publish... capture is a wash, publish is faster/easier in iMovie 08 (see below).

I have a HDC-SD1:  i plug a 4GB SDHC card i(containing the raw video) into a USB card reader, then I can capture with FCP "Log and Transfer" or iMovie 08 "Import"... takes about an hour to capture 1 hour of video.  (With either FCP or iMovie 08 I can preview the clips and selectively capture/import).

Next, the editing... the iMovie 08 UI is superior and a lot faster for simple previewing, selecting, arranging, clipping, cropping, adjusting picture quality, etc.  Add a few Titles and you are done (no fancy slo-mo, voice-over, music BG, special effects)... 15 - 30 mins for an hour's worth of soccer practice or game.  (Instant gratification-- no rendering)

Then publish to the web for use by parents, teammates, coaches, etc... 30-mins to 2 hours depending on length of video and how many / what size formats.

We're not talking "The world's greatest video" here.. just something that I can get into the hands of the people who need/want it while it (the game or practice) is still fresh in their minds.

I come home from a game/practice, pop in the SDHC card, then pour myself a toddy, have dinner, etc.

Later, I spend 15-30 mins editing, then Publish to the web (and local iTunes for my Apple TV)... this goes on while I do something else.

Voila!  30 mins later the smaller formats are available on the web/AppleTV and the larger ones are being uploaded.

I've spent 15-30 minutes of my time out of about 2-3 hours elapsed time, and, AND, my audience has a timely, useable product to view at their leisure.

Incidentally, it is easy to bounce between iMovie and FCP if you need something the other tool does better!

And, all the video captured can be used by FCP or iMovie for later refinement to highlight or training video.

That's how!

OK, you really have to teach me how to turn an hour of digital film into a movie in thirty minutes. ...
